How many pictures of the same image per article?

I discovered into the thumbs folder more than 20,000 pictures, with articles that have up 20 identical images of different sizes.
I don't think this can be an ordinary situation: how can I tell unused size pictures? Can I delete them?

You can delete the thumbnail images if you like; they will get regenerated when needed.  See this post
