free items - no charge

We have items that customers can order at no charge at all such as free catalogues. Obviously this is no problem if charged items are  ordered at the same time. However, the checkout will also ask for a payment method if only free items are ordered. Is there an easy way or setting to bypass this payment screen if this happens? I will want to keep the rest of the checkout procedure.

There's been several threads about this and so far as I know this is a bug and there's no way round it without coding right now.
