publish products and category depending on customer role?

Hi,

I'm setting up a site in 1.60

Is it possible to publish products (and categories) depending on a customer role? We do retail and whole sale and it would be cool if we could present a store front tailored depending on who logged in.

I found some threads from 2009 but they do not sound very hopeful.

I know I can do pricing based on customer role (works great by the way) but would rather not show irrelevant products to the various groups of customers.
