Gift products

Would be nice to have feature for defining and automatic adding gift products (zero price) to shopping-cart/order, if shopping-cart/order-total is greater from some value.
These products in shopping-cart would be readonly (cant be removed or quantity changed).

Have you done this before? if yes, can you please advise on where to make modifications, just so I have an idea where to start?
