Customer note

I'd be nice to allow a customer to add an optional note during the order process.

That is not necessary. I believe that the Checkout attributes will do the job. It's important that these notes go onto the invoice etc. Checkout attributes will do that for you. Further more there is plenty of options in the framework to do customer notes and order notes... (visible to customer).
