Free Shipping on Order over x.xx

Is there a way in version 1.8 to configure free shipping for orders over $x.xx? It seems like a common scenario but I can't seem to find a way to get it to work. Any help or input would be appreciated.

in admin, go to configuration-->shipping-->shipping settings

you will see here how to do this

remember to click 'save'

Still trying to get my promos figured out... Is there a way to apply free shipping to a specific category?

no, but you can assign free shipping to a product  -  then put these items in that category


if you edit the category description, you can mention here that everything in the category is free shipping ...
