Associated Products and further configuration

I want to group a set of products into a bundle. The problem I am having is that the opproducts require extra configuration. Let me pain a scenario. I run a basketball club. I have two jerseys and two shorts. The way they are individually in the store is each has to be configuired with a number and a size. But when I create a "bundle", it says to seem I cant configure part of the bundle

"The associated product has required product attributes, so customers won't be able to choose this product attribute value."

Is there a way to configure the product to do this or am going to have to build the bundle cart myself?

A customer has  no way to choose the attributes on the associated products.  It would require customization to do it.
Consider some other way to do it.  E.g., create a single product having separate attributes for jerseys vs. shorts.  Or if the idea is to provide savings, maybe a discount.
